Did You Know?
Biryani… a mouth-watering delight that captures hearts with its irresistible aroma and rich flavors. Just hearing the word brings the fragrance to life and awakens your taste buds. Loved by people of all ages, biryani is more than just a dish – it’s an emotion.
While biryani is often believed to be originated from the Persian or Mughal origins, Oon Soru (an ancient dish) proves that the concept of cooking rice and meat together with spices existed in South India for millennia.
Much like modern biryani, Oon Soru was originally a “war food.” It was prepared in large quantities as a one-pot meal to provide balanced nutrition for soldiers in army barracks or as a celebratory feast after victories.
The Purananuru and Akananuru (part of the Eight Anthologies) describe kings like Nalaankilli and Paari feeding their warriors and people with rice cooked in ghee and mixed with chunks of fatty meat.
Today, the legacy of Oon Soru lives on in regional Tamil styles like Dindigul Style Biryani.
